Even though the UK’s vacancy rate decreased from more than 1,000,000 unfilled positions in March 2023 to 916,000 by March 2024, and there are now 1.6 unemployed persons per vacancy compared to 1.4 in Q1 2024, many business sectors continue to struggle with recruitment. Up to 86% of surveyed organisations say they cannot secure the skills they need and 39% are only hiring to replace departing employees. Vacancies in business administration and support, social care, IT and tech, engineering, healthcare and life sciences and other highly skilled professions remain particularly hard to fill.
The truth is, despite recent improvements, the UK’s long-running talent shortage is far from over and agitating factors such as the lingering effects of Brexit, university leavers unprepared for the world of work and a greater demand for technical skills as technology plays a larger role in the economy only make the situation worse. However, an often unrecognised but crucial driver of current recruitment difficulties lies with businesses themselves - many organisations are failing to adapt to a rapidly evolving world of work.

The old employee/work/employer relationship is changing, turning more power towards workers, prioritising their desire for work that is fulfilling, delivers a better work-life balance and gives them opportunities to grow. The fallout from these developments is that many of the traditional methods of hiring are becoming increasingly inadequate. Standalone hiring processes, a fixed focus on experience instead of skills, weak Employer Value Propositions (EVP) and a failure to address the diverse needs of today’s multi-generational workforce are just some of the issues that present a significant challenge to current and future talent acquisition. In short, too many businesses are clinging to outdated hiring methodologies that cannot cope with the rapid pace of change.
Current developments in the talent market are not minor nor temporary. They’re significant, deep-rooted and here to stay. In response, UK businesses must adapt their hiring processes – focusing on necessary skills, meeting workforce needs and expectations and addressing a range of other external and internal issues that impact recruitment and retention. Talent acquisition in 2024 and 2025 will be all about who adapts first and fastest. The fleet-footed will prosper at the expense of those who prefer to stay with an outdated status quo.
