A climate action planthat treats our planetwith respect
We’re working across our entire UK operation to reduce emissions and explore new ways to limit or reduce ourimpact on the environment
ManpowerGroup UK has high potential for Scope 1,2,3 emissions reduction and we are moving fast to make these improvements.
In support of our global emissions reduction targets, ManpowerGroup UK is set to reduce our Scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions by 40% by 2030 from a 2021 base year and reduce our Scope 3 GHG emissions by 41% within the same timeframe, but we are aware that every gain we can make beyond our annual goals will help to get our global operation to its 2030 targets. Consequently, we are moving faster and further in our emissions reduction activities.
Accuracy in result reporting:
To ensure accuracy in reporting, we are expanding our plan to measure all emissions-producing activities across our entire UK operations. This will include items as varied as refrigerant top up data, to our employee commuting data.
We are also working with our landlords to obtain accurate data, and encouraging our property management company to improve contractual terms in any lease we may secure and improve the EPC (Energy Performance Certificate) ratings of our leased properties, allowing us to accurately measure environmental impact.
Supporting employees by offering hybrid working wherever possible.
Promoting less carbon-intensive commuting options such as public transport, cycling and walking.
Reducing business travel by making more use of video technology and, where business travel is necessary, to consider travel modes that have less environmental impact.
Offering a Salary Sacrifice scheme to encourage employees to adopt electric vehicles for their personal and business use, as well as exploring the switch to a zero-emissions company vehicle fleet by 2030.
Reducing power usage at work – heating, cooling, IT and lighting.
Organising internal energy savings initiatives, such as Maximise Your Time Month, where we encourage a reduction of video calls, only attend meetings that employees need to, and log off at the end of the working day.
Measuring and adapting every business process and reviewing its impact on the environment wherever possible (which can also have positive effect on wellbeing and psychological health and deliver a better impact for our employees and associates).
We will report annually on our progress to achieve our goal – what is going well and where we need to apply more focus.
Scope 1 and 2: Falling back after rising in 2021 as pandemic restrictions ended and returning business activity drove an emissions surge across the UK. 2022 saw a 24% drop in Scope 1 emissions from the year before, with Scope 2 emissions falling by an impressive 36%. Combined, our 2022 Scope 1 and 2 emissions were down 27% on the year before.
Scope 3: Despite rising in 2022 from 2021, due to ‘business as usual’ returning to the UK economy post-pandemic, our Scope 3 emissions were down by 64% against the 2019 baseline.
Overall totals: Even with the rise in Scope 3 emissions, ManpowerGroup UK’s total emissions in 2022 were nearly half the 2019 baseline.

Emissions aren’t the only environmental concern at ManpowerGroup UK. We’re cutting back, doing more with less and finding greener, better alternatives wherever we can.
Going greener on the road
As part of ManpowerGroup’s global drive to net zero by 2045, and the UK aspiration of a zero-emissions vehicle fleet by 2030, we have recently launched a Salary Sacrifice scheme that gives employees access to a new fully electric vehicle complete with insurance, road tax, replacement tyres, servicing and maintenance, and breakdown cover for a fixed monthly fee.
To encourage take-up, the cost is taken from the employee’s gross salary, not their net take-home pay, providing a generous tax savings benefit.
Additionally, pre-pandemic, all candidates were interviewed face-to-face at ManpowerGroup UK locations, but now many interviews and meetings are conducted by video chat or telephone to reduce the need for travel.
We are also exploring the installation of cycle parking at all our offices, and we actively encourage employees to walk, cycle or take public transport wherever possible.
These actions are helping to reduce:
Environmental pollution
Consumption of fossil fuels
Traffic congestion
Replacement waste, such as vehicle tyres and components.
Hybrid and remote working have become a major employee ask since the pandemic, and although we are aware that working from home does not suit all roles or all employees, we offer hybrid working to employees wherever possible. Working from home or from a nearby remote location reduces employee commuting and can make a major contribution to our emissions reduction plan.
It also provides better employee wellbeing, supports family requirements and gives employees and associates more scope to participate in activities that improve their physical and mental health.
Emissions and wastage from commuting
The physical, mental and environmental cost of sickness and ill health.
As part of our Carbon Reduction Plan, we are working with our office landlords to better share data and we are pushing for practical improvements wherever possible.
Even where policy and measuring may be in their early stages or presently unavailable, we know there is significant potential to gain additional savings by cutting back and doing more with what we have. Areas of near-future concern include:
Reducing paper waste, e-waste and upgrading recycling
No rubbish to landfill
Limiting business travel to an ‘essential’ basis and then using alternatives to air travel
Reducing water use and implementing accurate measuring
Only commissioning suppliers and vendors who meet strict environmental standards.
